The origin of someone's negative behavior normally comes from something deep-seated within their roots. You cannot undo the damage caused by an absentee parent, abandonment, over-protective parenting, poverty, spoiling or lack of support.

There is an art to loving people for all that they are and all that they are not. We are all imperfect and must extend the same leeway to others. This is not to say that you cannot communicate what your are feeling if someone's hurt you or disappointed you...just don't expect them to change. Instead be satisfied with a heart-felt apology.

Walking in to drop off a wine crate made jewelry case to Veritas, I was overwhelmed by the aroma of roasting pecans. Smooth. Creamy. Silky. Sweet.

A welcome scent coming in from the freezing cold of the St. Louis, Mo weather. Warm, inviting cranberry colors and an open bar which you can sit at to order, or if you are with a group you might want to fancy yourself a table. Either way, by the end of your meal, everybody will know your name. You'll feel like you've entered a gourmet Wine Enthusiast "Cheers" bar. After you have been once you will recognize owners and culinary experts David and Stephanie. David with his soft spoken peaceful demeanor welcomes and invites you in (as he stirs the sweetened pecans). Stephanie and her casual cool style is present in all the offering of gift baskets, gourmet food specialties, and interesting table accessories you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Featuring two cutting edge culinary cheifs: Andy Whittmer, Le Cordon Bleu trained, bustling about the kitchen making masterpieces out of dishes you never imagined (polenta eggplant parmesan) and Mathis Stitt trained at NEIC (New England Culinary Institute in Vermont) and did his internships at Sel de la Terre in Boston, and The Little Nell in Aspen, Co. Mathis is meat master at Veritas, everytime I enter, he is grilling, basting, or marinating some amazing looking fine meat.

Veritas offers a Wine Bar every Thursday- Saturday night featuring the best known and unknown wines in the world. I was listening to The Doobie Brothers overhead as Drew (the winebar guy) introduced me to J.B. Cohen wine from California. As I listened to the story of Mr. Cohen a long time hippie, lover of food, wine, olive oil, and manager for The Doobie Brothers (hence the music), I realized these are the facts about wine that make the wine so much more enjoyable. that I have never heard before coming to Veritas. Truth be told.

So how did a jewelry designer from Los Angeles come to offer wares at this independent culinary specialty store? I met Stephanie at a holiday Soiree at The Forest Hills Country Club last week, she was offering gift baskets Veritas is know around town for. So the story goes... that Bon Iver (which means "Good Winter") went to a cabin in the mountains for a winter and recorded his album. I have been obsessed with this album since introduced to it by a friend. Others song to look for (which I will be posting over the next weeks) are: Flume, Re: Stacks, For Emma, Blindsided, & Blood Bank. Here's what "All Things Considered" on NPR had to say about him:

"Bon Iver's Justin Vernon isn't the first heartsick singer-songwriter to chuck it all, disappear into the woods and pour his pain into songs. Dictionary.com defines breakthrough as: any significant or sudden advance, development, achievement, or increase…that removes a barrier to progress. Our film by the same name, BreakThrough, will weave through a tapestry of interview subjects who have created opportunities for many others to remove barriers to personal happiness and peace.

Dr. Wayne Dyer has said: “When you change the way you are looking at something, the something that you are looking at changes.” Each of the individuals interviewed in our film has helped others to question their seeming reality, to realize that all is not as it appears, to understand that there is a way out of pain and suffering, and to break through stuck patterns of behavior and thinking by sharing processes and insights which affect true and lasting change.

Director Michal Abney serves as the interviewer, leading ordinary people through a set of extraordinary conversations. Deeply impacted by his own personal journey of pain and limitation into healing, and recognizing that he was assisted by a number of mentors and teachers along the way, he and the film’s team offer concrete glimpses into the stories of teachers who have successfully helped others break through to the other side.

Each mentor being interviewed shares commonalities they see in the individuals they work with, and what happens to their lives after they apply the processes and take the actions that are recommended. For example, many people have experienced the frustration of leaving a bad relationship only to find that they have recreated strikingly similar dynamics in the next one. Insights are given into how to do things differently in a healthier, more aware manner, so that what is lacking in an individual is healed. Now, instead of attracting partners based on what is missing and seeking fulfillment in another (which can only result in pain), the possibility is created for a joining of equal partners who realize that they are complete, in and of themselves.

Borrowing from (among others) eastern philosophies about karma (life lessons) and dharma (life’s purpose), BreakThrough is about freedom from pain. Illustrated beautifully by Mariane Parisi, one of the film’s interview subjects, the conversation between her and the director reveals ways in which a person can safely and fully release from pain so that is it never recreated.

Encompassed within the ten hours of footage already in the can, Michal Abney allows himself to be led through a number of different processes and reveals, on camera, how easily it is to be freed from past limitations through the gentle guidance of a trusted teacher.
